Earlier this month we found out the results of the residents’ voting for the Newham Council Community Infrastructure funding pot that we applied for earlier in the Summer. [See blog post 'ClimateYouChange community funding bid for Green Infrastructure and Teaching project at Brampton Park' ].
Unfortunately, despite best efforts we were pipped to the post by projects tackling fly tipping, cleanliness, crime, ASB, an accessible toilet, old/damaged play equipment, and lack of book sharing (e.g., book sharing libraries (housed in small boxes in public spaces).
Only two greening projects got through: enhancements to the East Ham Nature Reserve and a particularly worthwhile initiative running gardening workshops for homeless adults in which they will make repairs and improvements to a community garden with the opportunity for paid work after.
Eight projects out of twenty received funding.
We promoted our project as best we could despite our proposal not appearing on the East Ham projects page until about a week after the other project proposals went live, owing to a council technical error. However, we narrowly missed out.
Whilst it is a shame that we were unsuccessful in our application, we were happy to see that we only marginally missed out, having achieved 90 votes. This wasn’t too bad after council technical teething issues meant that our project didn’t initially show up on their projects voting web page. We also started out on the back foot with our promotion, having decided to apply at the eleventh hour. So, all in all, we can take heart that a good number of residents still voted for us, we had our first experience of applying for funding, and we can only build on this moving forward!
